Editing —making or suggesting changes in a manuscript.
Edition —printing of a work that is basically the same as other printings. A revised edition contains substantial changes.
Editor in chief —the top editorial executive in a publishing program, setting policy for that program and directing acquisitions.
Electronic publishing —a general term embracing all forms of computerized publication, particularly those that deliver text or other materials directly to the consumer’s computer screen.
Elite type —a common, smaller typewriter face with 12 characters to the inch, as opposed to “pica type,” a larger typewriter type that runs 10 characters to the inch.
Em —approximately the width of the letter “m” in any given typeface, used to measure such things as indents and dashes. Twice as wide as an en measure, as for dashes.
E-mail —electronic mail. Mail messages, usually text, sent from one person to another via computer.
Embossing —raising the image above the paper level, such as a title on the cover of a book.
Endpapers —the heavy sheets of paper, one at the beginning and the other at the end, of a hardbound book that fasten the book to its cover.
Engraving —the cutting of a design into a block of material, resulting in a pattern from which a print can be made.
Enlargement —the photographic process of creating an image larger than the original.
Epilogue —a concluding section that rounds out a story and often updates the reader. Part of the text, not of the back matter.
Errata —errors found in printed books. Commonly corrected, prior to the book’s next printing, by the insertion of a loose sheet (an “errata sheet”) of revised text in each copy of the book.
Estimate —an educated guess of how much a job will cost. Also called a “price estimate.”
Evergreen— a book or article that is timeless.
Excerpt —a portion taken from a longer work. Also called an “extract.”
Exclusive —a news or feature story, or TV appearance, printed or aired by one media source substantially ahead of its competitors.
Expanded type —a wider-than-usual typeface.
Expert read —a reading of the book done by an authority on the book’s subject to determine accuracy and completeness prior to publication. Sometimes called a “peer read.” |
